Booking the appointment took some courage, and now the nerves have arrived. What will they ask? Will you have to talk about everything at once? The first session is far less intimidating than most people expect, and knowing the shape of it ahead of time helps. Here is how it works at our Seekonk, MA office, and what to expect if you meet with a therapist anywhere at Elevate.

Before You Walk In

Most of the preparation happens before you arrive. You will complete intake forms through a secure client portal, which cover your background, what brings you to therapy, and basic health and insurance details. Our team verifies your insurance benefits ahead of time, so you know what to expect from a copay or deductible before you sit down.

It helps to bring a few things with you:

  • Your insurance card and photo ID
  • A short list of what has been weighing on you, even if it is messy
  • Any questions you want answered, such as how often you will meet or what approach your therapist uses

You do not need a polished story. Your therapist will help you sort out the details.

What Happens in the First Session

The first session is mostly a conversation. Your therapist will ask about what brought you in, what you have tried before, your history, and what you hope will change. Many clinicians describe this as an assessment in both directions: your therapist is learning about you, and you are learning whether this person feels like a good fit.

Expect your therapist to cover the practical side too:

  • Confidentiality and your privacy rights, including what stays between the two of you
  • How therapy works, including how often you will meet and how long sessions last
  • Your goals, so the work is built around what matters to you

The National Institute of Mental Health encourages people to ask about a therapist’s approach, the rationale behind it, and the goals of therapy, and notes that it is important you feel comfortable with the person you work with. Your first session is the right time to ask.

What You Do Not Have to Do

You do not have to share everything in the first hour. You control what you talk about and how fast. Many people leave the first session feeling like they only scratched the surface, and that is normal. Your therapist is not expecting a full confession on day one. Trust builds over time, and the early sessions are about laying groundwork.

You also do not have to decide anything on the spot. If something about the fit does not feel right, say so. Good therapists welcome that conversation, and a practice with many clinicians can often help you find someone better suited to you.

What Happens After the First Session

By the end of the first session or two, you and your therapist will usually have a working plan. That plan covers how often you will meet and which approaches fit your needs. Depending on what you are working through, those might include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness, or play, art, and music therapy for younger clients. Over the following sessions, your therapist will check in on whether the plan is working and adjust it as you go.
